Metal Life

  • I’m new to metal music and don’t want to be a poser

Being a metal head isn’t about anything more than liking metal. Plane and simple.

Some will gate keep the genre and judge you for not knowing some obscure Black metal band that only has 100 monthly followers on Bandcamp…..

These people suck! Don’t buy into what they say and let people listen to what ever they want.

Metal is just meant for everyone and can express any emotion. There are no rules… well there is one. Wear as much black as you can. This rule is dangerous though, as throughout your time spent finding band tees your closet will get darker and darker. That’s fine though cause who gives a fuck?

I digress though. Metal is a fun genre of music to dabble in and find new music literally everyday. Just remember to be yourself and do what’s comfortable to you.

If anything I recommend starting with the basic legends of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

These legends solidified Metal as a genre and made it possible for all of us to enjoy the current state whether we like them or not.

Now if this is still to hard dabble in classic hard rock legends like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. If you need further rock recommendations I’d watch School of Rock Staring metal/rock legend Jack Black.

Now Go have fun and enjoy some metal! Explore Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Bandcamp, and google. There’s so much music out there to go listen to!

  • Dopesmoker by Sleep

Album Review By Bryce Andrade 1/6/2023

This album is one of the purest albums someone could ever listen to. This album has one song entitled Dopesmoker and is an iconic album within the doom metal scene. The face melting fuzz and distorted tone elegantly comes together as one of the best instrumental pieces of all time. If one should ever dabble into the world of doom metal this album should be at the top of every list. Dopesmoker clocks in at a time of one hour three minutes and twenty-nine seconds.

Sleep is a band coming from San Jose, California and consists of bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, guitarists Matt Pike and Justin Marler and drummer Chris Haikus. Sleep is known for being one of the stoners, doom, sludge metal bands out and have been an iconic force to recon with. And in 2022 sleep re-re-released Dopesmoker and as an album with only one track it consistently finds itself as a conversational piece for many metal heads.

The album famously found itself in limbo for years before it finally got released in its original date but the mystic of the album did not take away from the greatness. The original album was released under a different title “Jerusalem” in 1999 but in 2003 the band re-released the record as “Dopesmoker”.

This album is just a piece of art that never fails to keep listeners interested and the riffs that are recorded in this album are amazing to say the at the very least. These tone chasers have perfected what it means to be an artist and every time you listen to this album you hear a wave of sound that is matched by no other band. The uniqueness that is sleep cannot be touched and the power behind their sound keeps listeners coming back.

Sleep is an Iconic band that has stapled itself legendary within the doom community and they are metal gods walking amongst us mortals and will remain to be one of my favorite bands of all time. If you find yourself ever wanting to listen to doom Sleep should be the first band you check out.

  • Kairos By Osiah Album Review

    Review by Bryce Andrade

    Released December 8th, 2023

Osiah, a deathcore band that hails from England, brings back Deathcore’s raw power with their newest release, a full-length album, Kairos. Osiah has been a consistent deathcore unit, with Kairos released as their fourth full-length album.

With a powerhouse lineup of expert musicians, like Rick Lee Roper (Vocals), Christ Keepin (Guitars), Andy Mallaby (Bass & Guitars), and Danny Yates (Drums), it’s no surprise that Osiah does not disappoint with Kairos and immediately reels listeners in instantly with their first track entitled “A Great Nothing.” This track is as Deathcore as it gets, and for me, Deathcore has always had a way of turning concert halls into mosh pit arenas. The first riff hits heavy, complex, and fast as this song is brutal as fuck and sets the tone for the whole album. Roper’s vocals have an impressive range, and his confidence in himself can be heard with every word sung. Roper’s presence is emulated by the others in Osiah, and they all bring a refreshing quality of seasoned musicians who care for their craft and have perfected the Deathcore genre to a tee. The lost art has seemed rather bland in recent years, but Osiah has never wavered and brings fans something new to look forward to within every album and that rings true with the release of Kairos.

The First song introduces a trend of heavy riffing and face-melting breakdowns that leave you asking, “How can it get any heavier?” But let me tell you that there’s nothing lackluster about Kairos, and it is consistently one of the heaviest albums to close out 2023. This band shines into the new year and has a very promising 2024 ahead of them. The second track entitled, “White Feather” shines with brilliant melodic riffs and fills with guitars and drums. Roper’s vocals remain a consistent factor throughout the song and provide a heavy tone that leads listeners wanting to headbang when it comes to the breakdown section halfway through the track. Roper dives into an insane guttural that will leave you gutted and despaired. The fact that one band has so much talent leaves one completely happy just within two songs of the album. The front half of the album is reliable and unwavering, and the production quality of the album can be heard through it all.

And that leads me to my favorite track that comes in as the eighth track on the b side entitled “Memento Mori”. The last breakdown is downright filthy, and if you don’t make a disgusted face when listening to it, you’re in the wrong. This breakdown is everything you need in a song, leaving you more than satisfied. It’s more than brutal, and I don’t think it could get any heavier than that. It’s worth the wait, as the whole album is nothing but straight-certified hitmakers across the board.

The album’s last song, Hues Refract, leaves one feeling melancholy and is one of the softer, more melodic songs. The eerie intro leaves one feeling uneasy, but is thrown into a heavy-ass power ballad that allows the guitarists to show off their musical prowess even more. This album is just so damn consistent, and there is something for everyone, even if you do not love Deathcore.

  • Crookedhead By Ufomammut Album Review

    Review by Bryce Andrade

Ep Album released October 31st, 2023

Ufomammut (pronounced in the Italian way oofomammoot) has stood the test of time, and throughout the past 25 years, the Italian quartet has released some of the best Doom metal. Doom is an eclectic scene rarely glorified by those within the heavy metal scene. Still, the Italian Ufomammut continues challenging the status quo with their most recent EP album, “Crookedhead.” The current members of Ufomammut include the following: Poia (Guitars and Fxs), Urlo (Bass, Vocals, Fxs and Synths), Lerve (Drums and Fxs) and Ciccio (Soundlord). The album was recorded and produced by Lorenzo Stecconi and is Ufomammut’s 10th album.

Crookedhead brings face-melting riffage for eighteen minutes straight and is blessed by the riff gods. The EP is an instrumental Fortress that provides listeners with a wall of heavy fuzz balanced perfectly with distortion that sends listeners into a psychedelic trance. The wall of sound within each track engrosses listeners and paints a vivid color of sound, uniquely Ufomammut.

The first track, entitled Crookedhead, leaves no room for disappointment for fans as it’s downright dirty, and the riffs kick off with a full sound of fuzz and drumming that drives you right out of your seat. At the same time, the song slows itself into a breathable space that gives listeners a chance to get lost in the pure power that Ufomammut brings to the table.

Supernova then launches fans into a more melodic technicolored trip loaded with a unique flavor of riffs. One thinks of Supernova as a song when trying to define doom and sludge as genres. Ufomammut’s EPS has grown stronger and continues giving fans what they want.

Lastly, Vibrhate is a track that should be blasted at full volume. This track is the shortest within the EP and does not waste any time. At the very least, if I saw this song performed live, I’d want to be upfront, getting my face blasted by the power of the amplifiers. The Fxs throughout the song and vocals bring an exceptionally fabulous mix to the EP, add something special, and do not take away from the foundational structure of the song.

With that being said, Ufomammut is now touring in 2024 throughout Europe, and if you can see them, I would highly recommend them as they are a staple within the Doom scene and shouldn’t be missed out on by any fan of metal.
